Morning sickness in pregnancy, hyperemesis and other names given to it. …

Not all mothers to be are lucky……. Some do suffer from morning sickness during pregnancy. Hormonal changes in the body of pregnant women is one of the reasons they get the morning sickness.

Approximately 7-8 out of every ten pregnant women will experience motion sickness in pregnancy. Some are just experiencing a feeling of nausea, some will have vomiting. But only a few (1 in every 200 to 300 people) will actually suffer from very frequent vomiting that is called ‘ hyperemesis gravidarum ‘.

This condition can begin as early as 4 weeks of pregnancy and usually will stop at week 20. However, there are some who continue to suffer from this symptom until the 3rd trimester of pregnancy.      

Tips to overcome motion sickness pregnancy:

  • Stay away from the odour that can cause you nauseated.
  • Wear comfortable clothes
  • Avoid getting into crowded places.
  • Drink regularly to replace lost body fluids
  • Take small but frequent meal. (2-3 hourly)
  •  Avoid foods that may cause nausea i.e.  oily and spicy food, caffeine or  food that are too sweet
  • Try to take plenty of high protein foods (milk, yoghurt etc.)
  • Get enough rest and sleep. 

There are some studies found that ginger can reduce the symptoms of nausea and vomiting.      

Nausea and vomiting can also be reduced by anti-emetic medication (drug to control your nausea & vomiting) given by your doctor. 


Sometimes a person may require intravenous fluid treatment to replace lost fluids.     

 If you are experiencing extreme vomiting, could not tolerate orally (eat or drink) or suffer from weight loss, you may be suffering from hyperemesis gravidarum.

Unlike the usual morning sickness, hyperemesis gravidarum, can be dangerous. Consult your doctor for advice.
